Data Performance and Availability: The Foundation of Business

The natural technological evolution that occurs within companies—driven by the acquisition and/or development of new applications that align with business objectives and medium- and long-term strategies (such as customer relationship management, business intelligence, supply chain management, and enterprise resource planning, among others)—is increasing the demand for more robust processing platforms that are more complex to operate. As a result, high application performance and improvements in data quality and availability are now viewed as necessary standards.

Through its DBA Support Contract service, BSH Consulting can assist your company in managing and administering a robust and highly available database environment. These services range from planning and installation to data migration, including the design of optimal database schemas for new or existing applications. This service is available for the following products: IBM DB2, SQL Server, and Oracle.

DB Environment Assessment (DEA)

As the first step in the service, a Database Environment Assessment (DEA) is conducted to evaluate and document the current state of the client’s database environment. Among other things, the DEA enables:

  • Analyze users' current information requirements regarding the database platform, specifically: applications, data criticality, and database design.
  • Conduct an inventory and analyze the system resources available to the database platform for operation, including servers, backup devices, backup capacity, network connections, memory, and other components.

It should be noted that the information collected during the DEA phase is dynamic and needs to be updated throughout the duration of the service. BSH Consulting is responsible for keeping this information up to date, based on the information provided by the client’s IT staff.

DB Operational Assistance (DOA)

Once the DEA phase has been completed, a periodic recurring service known as DB Operational Assistance (DOA) is performed, which, among other functions, assists the client with:

  • Define backup strategies
  • Provide recommendations on database design for new and/or existing applications
  • Apply performance considerations in design and development
  • Issues arising from daily operations
  • Monitoring key parameters of the database platform and generating operational reports to keep the client’s IT operations staff informed and up to date, in order to anticipate future issues and/or take appropriate action
